You can’t send a cleaner onto every site with exactly the same preparation. On some sites, particularly healthcare environments, the risks are different. A cleaner may be working around clinical waste, blood or blood-stained body fluids, contaminated surfaces or potentially discarded sharps. Where a risk assessment identifies occupational exposure to blood-borne viruses, Hepatitis B vaccination may be an important part of protecting that employee. HSE guidance also makes clear that vaccination is an additional control, not a replacement for safe working practices, PPE, training and correct procedures. That is why mobilisation has to go further than: “Here are the keys. Here is the cleaning cupboard. Off you go.” Before placing somebody on a higher-risk site, you need to understand the environment, assess the hazards and make sure the employee has the protection and training appropriate to the work they will actually be doing. For Hepatitis B specifically, UK guidance recommends vaccination for healthcare workers who may have direct contact with blood or blood-stained body fluids.
